Day 3: The Road Less Traveled

Every day on the road is so rich with adventure; it is hard to believe all we manage to pack into one day! We awoke in Beaver, anxious to hit the road. Southern Utah gives Dave the creeps! It was a beautiful drive across the vertical axis of the state though…which seems to follow mountain range after mountain range. Snow caps the very tops of the mountains in the distance. We’re on interstate now, so the ride is smoother. There was less falling over while in motion, though at one point, the basket of utensils came crashing down- splaying knives (yikes), forks and spoons all over the floor. No injuries to report though!

Carter seems to know that he is losing his bottle at the big 2 birthday and has that thing stuck in his mouth constantly. It’s a little embarrassing to me, but hey…he’s content in his carseat, so who’s judging. It seems to be in every picture we take too!

We drive through what Dave calls 150 miles of nothing and make it to Provo. Just past Provo, it gets really pretty with lots of switchbacks along Deer Creek. We pass a gal in hip waders with a huge fishing pole. Love it! It looks like a great place to do some white water rafting! (in a few years, of course!)

We roll into Park City around 2 and we’re all starving and grumpy. Park City is such a cute little ski town, but there isn’t a lot of room for parking a 36’ motorhome. It is looking pretty dismal, until finally we happen upon a public parking lot with lots of room. If it hadn’t been a Monday, I think we would have been out of luck. We had a wonderful lunch in a local eatery and got a little shopping in. After a warm latte (us desert rats are freezing here) and some ice cream (for the mini desert rats), we’re ready to roll. We hit the Park City Albertsons and stock up some groceries. We found some incredible looking mushrooms to whip into our chicken alfredo and most importantly, milk for Carter’s bottle obsession.

By the end of our shopping trip, Mommy is snapping at Hannah for roaming off with the cart while the bagger is trying to load the cart…so we agree (without a single word spoken) that it is time to find a place to dock this land yacht. (MOM!!!)

Rockport Lake is nearby and they have RV hookups, so onward we head! We turn off, along a desolate looking road and happen upon a lake. Except there isn’t a park in sight. We end up driving around the entire lake before finding it…not without contemplating turning around a few times. Until we see it!

It’s the least expensive place we’ve found, so we head on in. We drive back for a number of miles until the road is ending in 500 feet and there it is…our campground. Overlooking the Rockport Lake is the Skogebo oasis. The sun is glistening across the lake with a gentle breeze rolling in. Hovering over our fire ring is a log that has been eroded into the shape of a bear or mountain lion’s head. I can’t decide which.

The girls throw on their swimsuits and I’m thinking…no way. Jack and I test the water and agree, its pretty darn cold! Of course that doesn’t stop a kid from splashing in a lake. It was a wonderful evening. I think the pix of Dave kicking back in the lounger with a glass of wine and the lake in the background says it all- Happy Man!
